John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Established in 1963 to protect part of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S., Pennekamp pairs a pleasant shoreside park — small beaches, mangrove kayak trails, an aquarium-equipped visitor center — with the boat trips that are the real draw.

Glass-bottom boat tours suit non-swimmers; snorkel and dive boats run to the reef itself, including the famous Christ of the Abyss bronze statue in about 25 feet of water. Trips sell out in season, so reserve ahead.
