The Everglades with Kids: A Family Day from Florida City

The plan

1. 6:30–9:00 AM

   Unhurried breakfast

   The hot buffet runs 6:30–9:30 AM, so even a slow family morning still gets everyone fed before the day. All 88 rooms are ground-floor — no elevator wrangling with the stroller.

2. Morning

   Everglades Alligator Farm first

   About 15 minutes from the hotel. Do the farm in the morning: the gators are livelier before the heat, and the included airboat loop plus shows and feedings take about two hours. Check the show schedule when you arrive and plan your loop around it.

3. Lunchtime

   Ten minutes from the farm, on the same road. Milkshakes for everyone (key lime is the benchmark), exotic fruit to dare each other with, and a small animal farm out back the kids will not want to leave.

4. Early afternoon

   The Anhinga Trail — the real Everglades

   Continue into the national park (about 20 minutes from the hotel) to Royal Palm. The Anhinga Trail is a short, flat boardwalk loop — manageable for little legs — with wild alligators, herons, and anhingas close enough to count teeth.

5. Mid-afternoon

   Pool

   Back by mid-afternoon for the outdoor pool — open 8 AM to 9 PM — which, ask any parent, is the actual headliner of the trip.

What to book ahead

• Nothing is strictly required — the farm’s airboat is included with admission and the Anhinga Trail just needs a park pass. That’s what makes this the low-stress family day.
• Sun protection and mosquito repellent, especially May through November.
• A rainy-day fallback: the Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace is 5 minutes from the hotel.

Tips from our front desk

• Airboats are loud — the farm provides hearing protection, but babies and noise-sensitive kids may prefer to sit that part out.
• Do the farm before the park: guaranteed gators first means the boardwalk is a bonus, not a gamble.
• With a second day, Zoo Miami is about 30 minutes north — 750 cageless acres, and rentable safari-cycles instead of a long stroller push.
• Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms; front-load the outdoor stops and keep the pool or outlets for late day.

Common questions

Will my kids actually see alligators?

Yes — twice over. The Everglades Alligator Farm has thousands of them with shows and feedings on a schedule, and the national park’s Anhinga Trail is the most reliable spot in the park for wild ones, especially in the winter dry season.

Is the airboat ride okay for young children?

The farm’s airboat loop is included with admission and hearing protection is provided, but airboats are loud — many families with babies or noise-sensitive kids let one adult ride while the other watches the gator shows.

Is the Anhinga Trail stroller-friendly?

Yes — it’s a short, flat boardwalk loop at Royal Palm, a few minutes past the park entrance. It’s the easiest real-Everglades walk there is.

What if it rains on our family day?

Swap in the Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace (5 minutes from the hotel) or the covered portions of Coral Castle’s tour, and keep the farm and boardwalk for the drier window — summer storms are usually an afternoon pattern.
